Voting Out-of-State
Out-of-State students may choose to register and vote in their permanent home states rather than re-registering with their local or on campus address at UMD. Out-of-State students can find their state’s voting information in our state directory below or by visiting vote411.org.
The deadline to register to vote in California for the general election is October 21, 2024. Register to vote here and check your registration status here. County elections officials mail vote-by-mail ballots to all active registered voters. Your county elections office will begin mailing ballots by October 7, 2024. Mail-in ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received no later than 7 days after Election Day.
The deadline to register to vote in Connecticut is eighteen days before Election Day, which is October 18, 2024, for the 2024 General Election. Register to vote here. Connecticut has a 3-month waiting period for switching parties. To receive an absentee ballot, you must fill out an application here by November 4, 2024. Ballots will be mailed to you beginning October 5, 2024, and must be received by November 5, 2024, at 8 p.m. If you choose to vote in person, look up your polling place here.
The deadline to register to vote in D.C. for the general election is October 15, 2024. Register to vote here and check your registration status here. All District of Columbia voters will automatically receive a vote-by-mail ballot leading up to the General Election. All registered voters will automatically receive a ballot at their mailing address. If you will be away from your DC residence during the election, request a mail-in ballot here by October 21, 2024. To request a mail-in ballot you must do so from your county’s Supervisor of Elections by 5 p.m. October 24, 2024. Mail-in ballots must be received no later than 7:00pm on November 5, 2024. Applications for absentee ballots must be received by your election office by October 25, 2024. Absentee ballots must be received by 7 p.m. on November 5, 2024. To request a vote-by-mail ballot, you must complete this form and mail it to your county clerk or voting supervisor by October 31, 2024. Request a mail-in ballot here by October 29, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. and make sure your completed ballot is received by your county election office by 8:00 p.m. on November 5, 2024. The deadline to register to vote in Virginia for the general election is October 15, 2024. Register to vote here. Request a mail-in ballot here by October 25, 2024. Completed mail-in ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received before noon on the third day after Election Day. Absentee ballots can also be dropped off in-person at a drop-off location by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day. To vote in person, look up your polling place here.
The deadline to register to vote in Texas for the general election is October 7, 2024. Register to vote here. To request an absentee ballot, you must submit an application to the early voting clerk by mail or email by October 25, 2024.
